Long Eyelashes Twiggy Style – Learn How A 1960′s Super Model Styled Her Eyes & Ruled The World!
Fashion Week in New York is here. And, in the spirit of glamour, glitz and remembrance, I choose to write about one of the greatest fashion icons of a generation – Twiggy!
Twiggy’s appearance in the 60s was at once revolutionary and inspiring.
Some say that Twiggy was inspired in fashion by Patty Boyd. For those of you not of the 60s generation, Patty was the wife of the Beatles’ lead guitarist, George Harrison, and the inspiration for his song, “Something!” Bet you didn’t know that Frank Sinatra sang that song and called it the greatest love song of the 20th century. Patty was also Eric Clapton’s muse and the inspiration for some of his greatest music, “Layla,” “Bell Bottom Blues,” and “Wonderful Tonight.”
But, it was actually Twiggy who mastered “the look.”
Her waif-like figure, short, side-parted hair, and full, pouty lips were all vital to it.
But what really defined “that look,” and what women all over the world tried desperately to copy (with dramatically different degrees of success!), were her eyes.
Her fabulous big and vibrant eyes!
And the defining characteristic of Twiggy’s eyes? Her lashes! Her outrageously long, fluttering, dark, well-defined eyelashes – on her lower and upper eye lids.
As it turns out, Twiggy did not have very long lashes of her own, getting that look wasn’t an easy thing to do.
Here, is Twiggy’s daily long eyelashes, make-up regimen If you’ve got what it takes to be a supermodel, give it a try:
Step One – Preparation, Cover-up & Powder
Bathe your face with a mild detoxing cream. Then apply a cover-up, and powder. Follow this by applying a light peach or pink colored blush.
Stray eye shadow will wreck the look you will be making an effort to perfect. So, you should lightly brush a bit of powder underneath your eyes. Applying powder first makes cleaning off stray eye shadow easier. You may also want to shape and refine your eyebrows at this stage.
Step Two – Apply Eye Shadow
Brush a pearly white or some other light shade of eye shadow over your eyelid to lessen darkness. Twiggy did not always perform this, you really want Twiggy’s classic look, so try it out.
Step Three – Marking the Crease
Using a small eye liner or perhaps angled shadow brush, draw a line just above the natural crease of your eye, applying dark brown, grey, or perhaps black tone. Powdered eye shadow works the best for this kind of procedure. A pencil could very well be used if accuracy is a concern; be sure to smudge the pencil line so it will blend in with your eye shadow.
You don’t want the exact hard line a pencil makes.
Step 4 – Lining the Eyelids
At this point it gets to be challenging: You’ll need to have a moistened Q-Tip at hand in case you make a mistake. It’s hard to get liquid eyeliner off, after it dries, so use the Q-Tip. I’m really writing with experience. The Q-Tip comes in handy.
Get started along the outer edge of your eyelid as near to your lash line as you possibly can.
Working with the liner pen, draw a line towards the inside corner of your eye. The line should become thinner as you move toward the inside corner of your eye.
Twiggy put together a sexy illusion that made her eyes look larger by just drawing a line that was slightly longer than her real eyelid line. The line extended ever so slightly past the outer and inner corners of her natural eyes and gave her striking ethereal look!
Step 5 – This is Where the Life of a Supermodel Gets Tuff!-) – Fake Lashes!
(Well, you asked for retro and we are talking about the 1960′s! No Latisse; and absolutely no RapidLash . . . What’s a girl to do?)
False lashes really should be long, thick and as exaggerated as possible.
Apply fake eyelashes using the manufacturer’s instructions.
Typically, you peel the two lash sets off the plastic backer. Reduce the eyelashes to fit in your eyes.
Then, apply the glue to the base of the lash and wait no more than 10 seconds. Finally, position the fake eyelash just over your natural eyelash line and hold it in place till the glue sets.
Reapply your eyeliner if needed. (Remember, the longer part of the fake lash goes to the outer edge of your eye, the smaller part to the corner.)
Step 6 – Line Your Lower Lashes
To even further accentuate and embellish her eyes, Twiggy painted her lower lashes, as well!
If you want an honest “ModMakeOver” bite the bullet and accentuate your lower eyelashes with liquid eyeliner, too!
Begin with the inner corner of your eye and move outward to make a smooth, even line. This is definitely challenging! Practice and patience are essential
And . . .
You are finished! Clear away any wayward eyeliner and shadow and brush on a light layer of your mascara to integrate your natural lashes with the false ones.
P.S. – Twiggy also wore a pearlescent, pink shade lipstick. You ought to go for it! Apply a gloss over the color for those pale, shimmering, vintage lips.
